Urchin
[ Personality ] :
Urchin has tendency to be rather stubborn. Very stubborn. If he gets an idea into his head, even if it is proven wrong, he will stick to it. The only person who can really change his mind is Ariel and occasionally Sebastian. This stubborn streak comes from the fact that he has lived alone for so long and hasn’t really had any set rules to follow. He is too used to doing things his way. It has served him well and it will take him some time to understand that other people might know what to do as well. Now, while he does have this strong will about him, Urchin is also very insecure. Most of his life he hasn't had anyone tell him what to do but he also has never had anyone to praise him. No one to reassure him that whatever he has done is acceptable or impressive. It makes him rather gullible and he tends to fall in with the wrong people if they pay enough attention to him. One might say he is attention starved but it is something that he will not admit to, even when confronted with it. This insecurity issue also leads him to second guess himself fairly often. Then his stubborn streak kicks in and he goes with which ever idea hit him first. Even if it's a particularly bad idea or way to approach an issue. Of course... all of these combined does tend to make him a bit blunt. Just telling people what he thinks of them or their ideas. He never means it as an insult or something bad there…just doesn’t seem to be much of a filter between brain and mouth.
The final word to describe Urchin though is a brat. Not the spoiled type that ask for impossible things; no. He’s very frugal and appreciates even the smallest gesture of affection or appreciation. The type of brat Urchin is, is the brat that thinks he knows everything and is set out to prove just that. He knows he can get along well on his own and he knows he can prove it too. Deep down though, he is still a kid and half the time whatever he talks about doing is just that. Talk. Trying to seem tougher then he can handle to try and scare the bigger fish away. Even if his bluff is called, he won't back down. After he befriends Ariel he begins to grow a little as person but this particular aspect. The need to look and be strong, doesn't change. The reason for it does; now instead of just trying to survive he uses it to protect his new friends and semi-family.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Urchin is a very quick thinker, it’s what makes him and Ariel a rather strong team. They can follow each others lead. He is also a rather fast swimmer, able to sneak into the palace itself with only Ariel catching sight of him. His prankster habit also gives him the ability for some rather creative plans and another notch to his talent for sneaking around. How else would he survive pranking eleven Altantican Princesses?
Being that most of his strengths are mental, his weaknesses all come from how small and scrawny he is. Food was hard to get before he met Ariel so his body is pretty thin for a twelve year old boy. As a merman his other weakness is being stuck on dry land for too long. If a merrow’s tail dries out, then the merrow will die. Getting beached is easy if he swims to close to land. One strong wave and he’s up on shore.
In Vatheon his weakness will be how unsteady he is on his legs. It will take a great deal of time for him to get used to walking instead of swimming. His skin will also be rather sensitive to harsh winds and fog. Having been constantly wet for his entire life it will be an adjustment physically to being dry all the time.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Urchin only looks human. So he still is a merrow. Just one with legs.
[ Sample ] :
Opening his eyes to find himself underwater wasn’t surprising. He did it everyday after all. What was surprising though was yawning and suddenly finding that he couldn’t breath. He flailed a bit, his arm breaking the surface. Was he in some sort of tide pool? Was that why this was so shallow? Another burn in his lungs and he figured he could worry about that later. Sitting up he gagged a bit and after a moment coughed up a lung full of water.
“What cough* w-what’s going on?” The young merman opened his eyes to see a strange town. A surface town. “W-wait….ow!” He’d floundered backwards, as though the city itself was going to attack him. His knee scraped against the center of the fountain. He carefully lifted his leg out of the water and stared at it.
Those….no, where had his fin gone?! In place of shimmering olive green scales were two peach colored fins. With…what the heck were those. Urchin reached forward and pulled his pinky toe. Another yelp of surprise when he realized he could feel that. He could feel the sensation which meant…these were his.
He was human.
A cold panic landed in his gut and he brought his arms around him. The confusion racing through his head wasn’t helping any and he tried to work the flimsy looking fins. Stand up. Walk…wasn’t that what Ariel said humans could do? Actually use these..legs? Yeah, legs to move around. To walk, whatever that was, and dance.
“So. How do I do that?” He rubbed his damp hair and pushed up onto the side of the fountain, “I need to get out of here before the King finds out. Or I’m a fried guppy for sure…h-hey, what’s this?” Something had caught his eye and he picked up the familiar shape, “A starfish?”
A deeper frown etched over his face as he looked up and around him again. This wasn’t Atlantica. Where was he?
[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : *heavy reference to the movie SPLASH* Would it be possible for Urchin to turn back into a merrow whenever he was completely immersed in salt water? And the water would have to have a salt content similar to the ocean. Once he is out of the water and dried off he’d go back to his more human appearance.
